Alliance Organizer

Hours: 20/week

Location: Remote, with travel
Pay/Benefits: Salaried (exempt) $36,000-$41,000 per year based on experience. Health/vision/dental insurance, HSA and retirement savings options

About the Position

The Organizer is responsible for organizing and supporting Alliance members, coordinating special Alliance projects, and generally tending the health & function of the Alliance as a whole. The Alliance Organizer convenes & facilitates the Steering Committee and coordinates with and supports Alliance Working Groups and individual members. The Alliance Organizer fills a variety of roles depending on what is needed – facilitator, networker, campaigner, communicator, event organizer, and more. The Organizer serves as the key driver of projects, campaigns, and collaborations within the Alliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Alliance members and member organizations to organize place-based grassroots campaigns for forest defense and climate justice, including campaign strategy and  planning, communications, facilitation, public speaking and  education, event and action organizing. This includes traveling (mileage reimbursed) to communities across the PNW. Currently, the majority of Alliance members and member groups are based in Washington and Oregon.

  • Coordinate with other Alliance staff to welcome & orient new Alliance members, supporting them to find opportunities to deepen involvement and take action. 

  • Coordinate Alliance projects, including major gatherings, fundraising events, resources & publications, and more. 

  • Support Alliance Working Groups with resources, coordination, organizing, and project capacity.

  • Bottomline annual Alliance member gathering (winter) and Steering Committee retreat (summer)

  • Develop and manage relationships with diverse groups and stakeholders within and outside of the Alliance, helping to find alignment, establish common ground, collaborate across differences, and navigate disagreements when necessary.

  • Operate as both a leader – taking initiative to develop and drive new projects and campaigns forward – and a supporter, adding capacity to the work of Alliance members.

  • Convene bi-monthly full-Alliance meetings — coordinate planning, reminders, and agenda-building, assist with presenter recruitment and outreach, ensure work is effectively delegated among Steering Committee members.

  • Convene weekly Steering Committee meetings by creating agendas, sending reminders to members and facilitating meetings.

  • Connect Alliance members with resources, other members and Alliance Working Groups.

  • Facilitate constructive discourse between differing viewpoints and help work through occasional conflicts.

  • Work with the Steering Committee and other Alliance staff to ensure Alliance public-facing resources such as social media & website, are updated regularly to reflect pertinent news & campaigns.

  • Engage in hiring process for other Alliance staff positions.

  • Support occasional Alliance informational events and workshops.

  • Manage and supervise interns and volunteers, in collaboration with other Alliance staff and Steering Committee

Qualifications

  • Experience in environmental and/or climate advocacy, preferably with history of working in land protection and/or climate justice organizing.

  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate with diverse stakeholders and broad-based coalitions.

  • Strong facilitation and relationship-based communication skills.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills.

  • Experience developing strategy and implementing campaign plans.

  • Strong grasp of environmental justice and experience working with frontline communities.

  • Ability to deliver on deadlines.

  • Proficiency in basic communications technologies including Zoom, Google Groups, etc.
